The Tonto National Forest, encompassing 2,873,200 acres, is the largest of the six national forests in Arizona and is the fifth largest national forest in the United States. The Tonto National Forest has diverse scenery, with elevations ranging from 1,400 feet in the Sonoran Desert to 7,400 feet in the ponderosa pine forests of the Mogollon Rim . The Tonto National Forest is also the most visited "urban" forest in the United States. The boundaries of the Tonto National Forest are the Phoenix metropolitan area to the south, the Mogollon Rim to the north and the San Carlos and Fort Apache Indian Reservation to the east. The Tonto is managed by the USDA Forest Service and its headquarters are in Phoenix. There are local ranger district offices in Globe, Mesa, Payson, Roosevelt, Scottsdale, and Young.

  • This is a great place to take a hike or to just go and have a picnic, There is Pretty much not a single area in Prescott that is not a good place for an outdoor experience. I've heard somewhere around this area is an old hideout for Al Capone, Not sure if it is true but when I spent 8 months and Prescott I had more than 3 people tell me that it is out there and even had one person tell me he took the 3 hour hike to get there... Upon getting there he found a very small entrance which was kind of like a fall out shelter it add a small opening with a small ladder, then lead to a huge tunnel which he did not traverse into...
  • This gorgeous forest is right next to Scottsdale. It has amazing wildlife and plant life, and is very peaceful and natural. There are a few trails for Jeeps and dirt bikes. You really see the beauty of nature here.
