#3 of 16 in Parks in Arlington
Gravelly Point is an area within the National Park Service's George Washington Memorial Parkway in Arlington County, Virginia, in the United States. It is located on the west side of the Potomac River, north of Roaches Run and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. The paved Mount Vernon Trail travels through the area.
Aircraft spotters and others use the area to see planes landing at the nearby airport. The area also has a boat launch. In 1746, a house, on a plantation later named Abingdon, existed near Gravelly Point on property that Gerrard Alexander owned. The name of Alexandria, Virginia, commemorates Alexander's family. In 1778, John Parke Custis, the son of Martha Washington and stepson of George Washington, purchased the plantation. Martha Washington’s granddaughter Eleanor Parke Custis was later born on the plantation. A house at Abingdon was destroyed by fire in 1930 and its ruins stabilized.

  • We live close by. I run on the trail pretty regularly, and we bring our nieces and nephews over to watch the planes take off and land. A nice place to hang out.  more »

  • Experienced this for the first time! Planes literally felt right above your head and the engine nose was incredible! Come on a warm day though. Bring some snacks and blanket and do a picnic. Lots of space, bike lanes, bench’s to sit at.
  • The location is best for a unique experience of watching the planes take off and land one after the other. Good enough free parking and lots of ground to enjoy a picnic or even play outdoor games. Restrooms available.
