Assateague Beach, Assateague Island

#3 of 12 in Beaches in Virginia
Beach · Nature / Park
Assateague Beach features wide, undeveloped sandy shores, salt marshes and wildlife. The barrier island where this beach is located is renowned for throngs of wild ponies that roam freely. Several local companies provide horseback riding and pony tours. In addition to admiring the horses, you can take part in swimming and hiking, or you can join crab hunters and shell collectors on the seashore. You're able to try surf fishing, kayaking, and off-roading at designated places. The area provides amenities like lifeguards, a visitor center, and restrooms. Be aware that horses on the island are wild; you're discouraged from trying to pet or feed them. To plan Assateague Island vacation without wasting time, ask Inspirock to design an itinerary.

  • Great place to spend the day close to Ocean City. You have the option to pay $100 for a special pass and drive your 4WD on the sand to the center of the island, you need to have shovel and other...  more »
  • Went week of July 4th and - wow - was it crowded! Lines to get parking. But a good time was had for all ages 3-67. No amenities so plan to bring everything you’ll need incl LOTS of sunscreen!  more »
  • Excellent beach for the summer and you want to be alone. This spot is perfect if you want to come and avoid people and be away from commercialism. I wouldn’t come here after Labor Day it gets cold quickly in my opinion. On a hot sunny day it’s perfect. You have to pay to get on the beach as the entire area is a national park. I pay for the week past it’s the best bang for your buck!
  • Nice beach. Always bring bug spray, the flys can be terrible. Close parking lot and ample beach area even on busy days. Visitors tend to crowd the areas closest to the parking lot naturally but if you're willing to walk up shore you can easily have an almost private experience. Ability to take 4WD vehicles on south end of the beach during certain times/conditions. Sand is cleanish, bathrooms are decent. Water like most of the east coast, green/brown hues depending on weather. Lots of areas where the waves crash pretty far out allowing for enjoyment by kids as well. No attractions on the beach so great for anyone who enjoys a true beach day without any distractions. Also worth mentioning that every time I've been to Chincoteague, I've seen a school of Dolphins swimming close to shore.
