Spirit of the Columbia
Astoria, named for famed fur trader John Jacob Astor, resides near the mouth of the Columbia River. The location sheltered the Lewis and Clark expedition for the winter of 1805-1806 as they waited for a ship to take them back east, but the ship never arrived, so the expedition headed back the way they came. The town paid homage to the explorers by rebuilding the log cabins that protected the group during that harsh winter; the area is now a National Historic Monument. The town boasts a population of just under 10,000 people. Its quiet streets are spotted with historical wooden homes painted in light colors.
