Zoo Atlanta, Atlanta

4.1
#1 of 20 in Outdoors in Atlanta
Initially a shelter for animals of a bankrupt travelling circus, Zoo Atlanta has grown into a 16 hectare (40 acre) settlement of over 1,500 individuals of mammals, reptiles, birds and amphibians. Here you can see the rare giant pandas, as well as the largest zoological collection of gorillas and orangutans in the United States. If you are not of a particularly sensitive nature, don't miss the carnivorous plants, particularly the Venus flytrap which feeds itself by preying on insects and arachnids. This venue is AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) accredited, pointing to excellent animal care, quality staffing and extensive involvement in global conservation efforts. You can expect to walk quite a lot here, so wear comfortable shoes. Plan to visit Zoo Atlanta and other customer-reviewed, writer-recommended Atlanta attractions using our Atlanta day trip site .

  • Visited this zoo as part of the City Pass group of exhibits and really enjoyed it. Highlights for our family, first and foremost were the gorillas. This is a great exhibit because they have a good siz...  more »

  • My wife and I loved our visit to Zoo Atlanta! We have much Zoo experience from Denver, CO, to Disney's Animal Kingdom in Orlando, FL. This is definitely one of our favorite Zoos now. The layout was intelligent and made viewing all of the animals an easy feat. The enclosures were extremely well kept and the animals seemed very happy. The views of the animals at this Zoo were incredible and we really only had limited views of the elusive Orangutans. They are currently under construction for more African animals, however I can only add points for their effort to build and grow this wonderful place. If I could suggest anything it would be more themed music to provide additional ambiance like I have seen at other Zoos.
  • Really really nice, but small. Not as many exhibits as I thought there would be. With my 1 and 3 yr old, we did the park in about 2 hrs. Staff are great with providing information. New Safari exhibit coming in 2019, so pretty excited to see what's going to happen with that. Overall, my kids had a blast. Definitely a great family outing if you're looking for one
  • Took my 5yo for a visit on Labor Day! She absolutely loved it & so did I!! We was able to see many of the animals and the others that we didn't get to see we'll see next time once the African Safari is finished! Not too crowded was able to maneuver through easily! Food a little pricey but that was expected! Next time will bring my own water & snacks! Overall great family place with lots to do and see! Make sure to check out the schedule of feedings & viewings etc so you can see all you want to see!!
  • We love Zoo Atlanta!!! Our membership is the best! We were able to take lots of visiting friends and family throughout the year and enjoy the beautiful exhibits ALL INCLUDED in the original membership price. Parking is the only issue. Get there RIGHT AT OPENING (9:30am) or plan to walk far from neighboring side streets. The small lot fills up fast. You can bring strollers and your own snacks which is so nice for the picky little eaters. Remember your kids' towels and swimsuits for the Free Splash Pad too!! Great way to get any extra energy out they could possibly have!! Our membership has some nice "members only" perks too. They often have later night events or fun educational things that are a nice added bonus. We love the zoo!!
  • I had the pleasure of hosting my child's 1st Birthday Party at Zoo Atlanta and it was definitely a memorable experience! I worked with Kate K. from the beginning to the end and everything was perfect and not one glitch on the day of the party. I highly recommend her. Everything I requested was there waiting on us!! The pizza from Proof of the Pudding was very good as well. We enjoyed the zoo and can't wait to go back after the new safari area is done. The zoo is very shaded, so even in the middle of July it wasn't unbearable. Thanks for making my child's 1st birthday exceptional.
