Initially a shelter for animals of a bankrupt travelling circus, Zoo Atlanta has grown into a 16 hectare (40 acre) settlement of over 1,500 individuals of mammals, reptiles, birds and amphibians. Here you can see the rare giant pandas, as well as the largest zoological collection of gorillas and orangutans in the United States. If you are not of a particularly sensitive nature, don't miss the carnivorous plants, particularly the Venus flytrap which feeds itself by preying on insects and arachnids. This venue is AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) accredited, pointing to excellent animal care, quality staffing and extensive involvement in global conservation efforts. You can expect to walk quite a lot here, so wear comfortable shoes. Plan to visit Zoo Atlanta and other customer-reviewed, writer-recommended Atlanta attractions using our Atlanta day trip site.

Zoo Atlanta reviews
San Diego no longer has Pandas, leaving just 3 zoos in the U.S. that do: DC, Memphis, & Atlanta. That fact alone makes Zoo Atlanta pretty unique & worth a visit if you haven’t seen the loveable...

I was visiting from another AZA zoo and the staff was very welcoming and accommodating! Beautiful exhibits and great layout make the zoo feel bigger than it is. Elephant wild encounter was a thrill...

Love this place so much. It's like our own savanna in our city! My kids loves there and so do us(me & my husband) we have so many good memories there, the place is clean ad very well organized. The animals looks healthy and happy and there are people around to guide and answer any questions about that particular animals etc, which is awesome and very informative for kids and even us as an adult, to expend our knowledge about them. The food court is nice and clean too. Restrooms are clean and well managed. Over all 5star place for a family fun.
I was able to visit the new expansion for the elephants, giraffes, zebras area. The elephants have a waterfall for them to go in when needed. The feeding of the giraffe is a popular activity. I like to see the excitement on the kids and adults alike when their long tongue comes out to grab the lettuce. The king of the jungle roar for us. The magnificent tiger came out to greet us while the red panda was cozy sleeping at plain sight Oh and who can forget the pandas. One was sleeping, one was tumbling and the other one meant business eating its bamboo. They are always fun to watch. There is also more entertainment for kids. The petting zoo, the train, the carousel, a climbing wall, a playground and walkways of rope. There is a cafeteria, different areas throughout the zoo for refreshment and some gift shops. There is entertainment for the whole family. ❤
