Continental Club, Austin

#7 of 75 in Nightlife in Austin
Nightlife · Blues Bar
The Granddaddy of all local music venues, the Continental Club has enjoyed a coast-to-coast reputation as the premiere club for live music in Austin since 1955.

"This is simply one of the greatest clubs in the country. With its rich tradition and great reputation for always having good music, the Continental Club seems to be a hot spot for anyone who really likes music. And if you go, you just may find yourself sitting next to Julia Roberts or Johnny Depp. You never know at the CC. And that's why bigger acts always make a stop here on tour. As far as musicians are concerned, there's no better place to play...or go." ~CitySearch.com

  • I took a trip to Austin for several reasons, but chief among them was to hear good music. I did lots of pre-trip research, and saw that this club has been around since the mid-50s and still...  more »
  • We saw Casper Rawls and Earl Poole Ball on a Thursday at six-thirty. No cover and reasonable drink prices. Both are in their 70s but have had big careers and can still play. Maybe only 40 seats and...  more »

  • Continental club came highly recommended and we were looking forward to an evening of good blues. AND THE BLUES WERE GREAT! Unfortunately, the bar tender was not. We arrived around 5:30 pm and were thoroughly enjoying the band. My 3 friends got a round of drinks, their first of the evening. We went back for a second round and were told we were too intoxicated. We literally were sitting in the back of the room in the provided seating area listening to the music, doing nothing out of the ordinary. I asked for an explanation, the bartender said we had clearly been drinking all day. I told her we had just arrived downtown, she said she had to do what her manager said. I asked to speak to the manager. The manager said she backed her bartender and couldn't legally serve intoxicated people. I asked how we were overly intoxicated and she just said she trusts her bartender. Unfortunately the night we had highly anticipated ended quickly because we did not feel welcome.
  • Being in Austin one of the best known live music scenes in the US, I felt that if I didn't see some live music on my visit would be a catastrophic failure. So on my last full day in Austin, one of the main things on my list was to go see some live music, and the continental club was on the top of my list of where to go. Continental Club is a great and intimate place to watch music.
