In 1985, Charles and Angeline Umlauf donated their home, studio, and 168 Umlauf sculptures to the City of Austin. Six years later, in 1991, the City built a museum to display the artwork on adjoining city property with private funds. Staff and volunteers maintain the museum with support of grants, donated funds, and contributions from the City of Austin, to maintain the museum and xeriscaped garden. The Museum maintains a seasonal schedule including exhibitions of Charles Umlauf and his twentieth century peers and contemporary art exhibitions.

My wife and I stopped here for about 40 min as we were driving through Austin. Not too big, this was a great way to spend a little bit of time (definitely less than an hour) to see beautiful... more »

The Umlauf is predominately an outdoor sculpture garden which is likely what most people want to see. And you will want to see them, they are wonderful in expression as well as range of subject. From religious imagery, to scenes of mother and children to whimsical subjects such as a hippopotamus there is something for everyone. However, a quick visit to the website details many other activities you may want to experience or plan your visit around.

From religious imagery, to scenes of mother and children to whimsical subjects such as a hippopotamus there is something for everyone. However, a quick visit to the website details many other activities you may want to experience or plan your visit around. If you are just here for the sculptures I would budget an hour and a half. There are tour guides but also quite a helpful site map with information on each sculpture that can act as a self-guide. There are restrooms as well as a water fountain and a small book store with items to purchase. I was able to access the outdoor gallery by public bus and a reasonable walk, but parking is also available.
