Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden, Avalon

4.0
#1 of 6 in Parks in Catalina Island
Wrigley Memorial & Botanic Garden stands as a tribute to William Wrigley Jr., founder of the Wrigley chewing gum company. Wrigley had a strong connection to Catalina Island and played a large role in shaping it for the future. Finished in 1934, the 40 m (130 ft) memorial tower at the center of the gardens marks Wrigley's original burial spot, although his body has since been moved. The memorial--built primarily from material taken from around Catalina Island--overlooks Avalon Bay. The gardens surrounding the memorial were designed by Wrigley's wife, Ada, and contain plants that grow in California but nowhere else in the world. These rare plants are spread throughout 15 hectares (38 acres) of the gardens, and are now tended to by the Catalina Island Conservancy. • The visit here had us taking a good walk. We enjoyed the native vegetation examples. A nice staff answered questions. Well worth the stop on our Catalina visit.  more »

  • The memorial was excellent and the grounds were well kept, but the plants cultivated at the gardens here are simply not interesting. The highlight of this location is definitely the memorial with its architecture and the views from the top of the memorial are excellent. I also like the access to the garden to sky hike next to the memorial which is one of the main reasons we came out here.
  • If you like a little stroll to see some desert plants well here you go. You need to rent a golf cart or bike to get here, parking is limited. The best part is the view on top. Gorgeous!!!!
