As the engines roar at Port San Luis, the Seaweed Express slides into the harbor. Aboard the grey Zodiac, a fast pace adventure awaits the daring. Located 15 minutes south of San Luis Obispo, Avila Beach is great for a day trip or a weekend getaway. Just head south, it is easily found off of Highway 101. There is much to discover while on the tour like flying with the pelicans, darting into caves, encountering marine animals, zooming under the planks of the pier and cruising into Pirates Cove.
It is all about the power and maneuverability of the Zodiac that grants access to the hidden caverns of the shoreline. The size of the rescue style boat allows a tight dry perspective of the rugged coast. Within the caves, the power allows a quick getaway with loads of control in the surf for a safe experience.
Kick off the shoes, hop aboard and hold on tight. The ride about the harbor is sweet with plenty of sea lions to come across under the pier, where star fish grip tightly to the pillars. Then it's off to fly with the pelicans. As the boat rushes the breakwater, the large birds are stirred to take flight alongside the Zodiac.
Each ride is a bit different as Captain Brink is always on the lookout for new hidden treasures. Along the ride, discover Fossil Point; check out Mermaid's Lair, White Rock and Pirates Cove — where the remains of an old port are still visible. Speeding along the seaweed patches, the salty mist cools the face on the way to the caves.
Natural cave formations along the shoreline are exciting to explore. There is some added adventure as the boat rides the tides and surfs the currents to get nice and deep. Depending on the tides, different caves are exposed and open for discovery. Riding the rapid outside a cave stalls time for a moment, as the waters rush about and seem to nearly consume the boat.
Get ready as music echoes throughout the boat. It is time to dart down the length of the pier at rip-roaring speeds. Throughout the tour, there is ample opportunity to stumble upon wildlife. Sea otters play about the kelp beds; dolphins are known to be frequent visitors; and whales are continuously migrating through the salty waters.
Seaweed Express offers half-hour adventure tours. Daily tours all year long from 10 a.m. until sunset. Hop aboard on the sports launch dock at Port San Luis. For reservations on the Seaweed Express, call (805) 703-0397 or visit www.avilabeachboatcharters.com
