Take a train ride along the first commercial mile of railroad track laid in the country at Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum. Built at the site of the oldest railroad station in the U.S., this museum traces the development of trains and displays an extensive collection of railroad memorabilia, a model railroad, and a working replica of the very first locomotive. Explore a historical roundhouse, observe what's happening in the engine shop, and wander through the gift shop to find souvenirs. With plenty of ramps throughout, the museum is wheelchair and stroller accessible. There is a play area for children as well as a snack bar. Train ride tickets for a short 20-mile ride are available for purchase on-site at the museum on a first come, first served basis. Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Museum Reviews
A wonderful collection of locomotives and other railroad cars and all sorts of related items. Most are in the main building ("roundhouse") but some are in adjacent buildings. Most of the locomotives (... more »
A hundred years of railroad history is on display, with numerous climb on and in engines and cars. Nostalgia heaven for those who recall the glory days of rail travel. more »
This place was amazing and had great history stories to go along with it. They have plenty of trains to view and even trains that you can walk on. A nice kids play area. We also went on a train ride and the conductors were great. I was shocked to see how clean their restrooms are and that they have a nursing station set aside for nursing mothers. Great experience and we will definitely be back.
Unlike other rail museums, this museum has full size rail cars, in addition to miniature models. Some civil war era rail cars are arranged in a "roundhouse" building, with placards explaining their history. Don't miss the rail cars in the parking lot. Some of them carried famous people such as President Lincoln. Visiting the parking lot portion is free. They also offer a 1-mile train ride on the first mile of B&O Railroad. The ride is narrated, but there isn't much new information, and the old MARC train is in poor condition. I do not recommend this train ride.
