Abbe Museum
Learn about Maine's Native American history at Abbe Museum, featuring more than 50,000 artifacts. Dating from the Paleoindian period to present times, these objects include everything from stone-based materials like knives, axes, and fishing weights to bone objects like combs, needles, and harpoons. Check out ancient pottery and jewelry, and don't miss the original canoe or the 3,000-year-old flute made from a swan bone. Consider choosing a souvenir from the Native American arts and crafts and educational books at the gift shop before leaving. A lovely exhibit. The children's artwork is inspiring and I loved reading the artists' notes about their works! Such fun to see! The display of porcupine artwork is breathtaking, the baskets are divine. The video clips do a great job explaining the cultural importance and symbolism of the artwork. The museum is housed in a beautiful unique building. It is well worth a visit!

Great ethnographic museum. Learned a ton on the indigineous tribes and early settlers. Laid out in easy to access and process manner. Digestible bites. Children's art show was heartwarming. Kudos to the teachers who encouraged creativity, self expression and self insight across a wide range of ages. Overall Impressive work current generation is doing to keep alive the language, culture and lifestyle of their ancestors.
