Learn about Maine's Native American history at Abbe Museum, featuring more than 50,000 artifacts. Dating from the Paleoindian period to present times, these objects include everything from stone-based materials like knives, axes, and fishing weights to bone objects like combs, needles, and harpoons. Check out ancient pottery and jewelry, and don't miss the original canoe or the 3,000-year-old flute made from a swan bone. Consider choosing a souvenir from the Native American arts and crafts and educational books at the gift shop before leaving. • Very friendly staff and interesting museum. We especially enjoyed the oral parts, with the different languages and music. I loved the whale part, the paintings were incredible. I also loved the children's pictures, they were cool. The music was really interesting, especially the modern song by the kids. The canoes were impressive as well. I would say this museum is ideal for older kids (8+) and adults.
  • Must see. Wonderful stories and the art from all of New England's First Nation tribes. Also, read how a governor revoked a tribes river rights so a gas line can be run through the tribal lands not 70 years ago - just 2 years ago! Wonderful museum....
