Devil's Lake State Park, Baraboo

4.8
Hike, fish, and boat in the idyllic setting of Devil's Lake State Park. The lake was uncovered when a glacier retreated many years ago. Walk up the quartzite bluffs surrounding the water and enjoy the view. Head to the nature center to learn about the history of the park and see displays of rocks and artifacts. You'll camp in the conifer forest of the Baraboo Hills. Campsites feature restrooms, and snacks and basic necessities are available at the Ice Age campground. You can rent a boat by the lake and pick up tackle, poles, and camping gear at the stores on the north and south end of the park. The proceeds from the stores go toward maintaining the park. • Our absolute favorite place to go in the summer. We love the less commercial side, the south side. You can rent canoes paddle boards kayaks and enjoy the whole day. They're very well stocked and the rates are somewhat reasonable. There is a nice shop there were you can actually get food to make or food already made. When you go hiking stay on the trails. There absolutely gorgeous with breathtaking views all the way around.
  • What an incredible hidden gem. We went all out today and hiked around the entire lake, including both bluff hikes. It was a haul, lots of up and down, and it took about 2 hours without many stops. It was gorgeous and a great workout. On the north shore there is a great beach, snack bar with ice cream, and a restaurant. There are rentals for SUP and kayaks. Lots of fun beach for little kids. Entry is free with a state park pass.
  • Great place to go! I’ve lived less than two hours from Devils Lake my entire life and this was the first time. Great atmosphere and the views are beautiful. The hiking is challenging but well worth the views once you reach the checkpoints. My only complaint would be that trails could be marked better and they could make it easier to get maps to navigate the trails. I will be back again in the near future for hiking and swimming.
  • We love going to Devil's Lake. Everyone working there is always helpful and kind. The bathrooms are always clean. The beach is very nice. There are all kinds of different trails for all abilities. The campsites fill up on the weekends very quickly but we've gotten lucky a few times checking Reserve America the week before for available sites. The site I've included pictures of is #466, super nice site with a little trail, lots of cool rocks and lots of space!
  • The campground would get two stars, everything else would get 4.5. We stayed at Quartzite, the far west end of the west loop. The sites were so sloped that we ran out of leveling blocks. Most other sites seemed similar. I felt bad for people in tents. Also, it's mostly an open grass field, with very few trees and little privacy. The gravel drive, which we had to park the camper on, was maybe 9' from the fire pit. The pit was directly under some low hanging branches. The rest of the site was huge, it would've been nice if they spaced the pit out further. Our entire site was loaded with garbage and cigarette butts from previous occupants. The fire pit was loaded with cans, pie tins, boxes, etc. The most annoying thing is that they don't have any established paths to cross the loops for access to either water stations or the bathrooms. You either have to take the long walk around the loop, or cut through campsites like an a-hole. The pit toilets were literally behind a campsite. It was incredibly odd. Not the newest/cleanest bathroom, but the showers were free. The lake, beach, hiking and other facilities were awesome. However, it's crazy busy on the weekends. If you don't like big crowds, go during the week. Firewood was decently dry. A bit pricey at $6 per bundle, which was about 8 real pieces and 2 smaller kindling pieces.
