Create an itinerary including Barnegat Lighthouse State Park
Barnegat Lighthouse State Park is located on the northern tip of Long Beach Island in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. The area where the lighthouse stands was regarded as one of the most important navigational points for ships bound to and from New York Harbor. The ships were dependent upon the Barnegat Lighthouse to avoid the shoals extending from the shoreline. The fast currents, shifting sandbars, and offshore shoals challenged sailors. The park is included as a maritime site on the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail. The park is operated and maintained by the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry.

  • Closed all summer for renovations. The grounds and visitor center are open but the Lighthouse itself is closed. However, swathed in scaffolding it is quite a sight!

  • I like these kinds of places that overlook inlets by the ocean, and the Barnegat Light end has always been a nice place to stop. This 2022 season the famous lighthouse will be covered in a maintenance wrapper and can't be climbed, but otherwise the park will be open. It's also a good area to drop a line in the water and test your luck/skill. My recent visit was right before the seasonal summer schedule starts. So there weren't many other people around.
  • Great place to visit and watch shore birds fly around. I specifically go for photography, but it’s a great place to take a walk and chill. Right now the Lighthouse is undergoing renovations so just be aware if you are going to photograph it. Also, nesting shorebirds area is NOT a place to walk your dogs! See photos.
