Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, Barnegat Light

#1 of 9 in Nature in Jersey Shore
Must see · State Park · Nature / Park
Barnegat Lighthouse State Park is located on the northern tip of Long Beach Island in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. The area where the lighthouse stands was regarded as one of the most important navigational points for ships bound to and from New York Harbor. The ships were dependent upon the Barnegat Lighthouse to avoid the shoals extending from the shoreline. The fast currents, shifting sandbars, and offshore shoals challenged sailors. The park is included as a maritime site on the New Jersey Coastal Heritage Trail. The park is operated and maintained by the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry.

  • This is a nice little park on Long Beach Island. In the park itself there almost seems to be smaller sub parks. There is a part of the park where you can take a stroll through the woods, part where you can walk along the beach, you can climb Old Barney, or even walk along the path leading along the jetty's. This park has public restrooms which I find to be a big deal on the island and is also dog friendly in the off season. This is a great park to go and just escape.
  • A beautiful park with a long walk on the jetty along the inlet (wheelchair friendly). Tour the picturesque lighthouse, watch the boats, stroll along the sand to the ocean side beach, learn the history of the lighthouse that led ship captains through one of the most dangerous inlets in the world. Bring a fishing pole or watch the fisherman reel in their catch. Picnic tables, a gazebo, bait shop, small restaurant, restrooms, parking lot. Beautiful spot to watch the sunset or sunrise. A favorite spot to visit.
