Create an itinerary including Hunting Island Lighthouse
Climb to the top of Hunting Island Lighthouse for views of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding marshes. Built in 1859 to warn ships to stay far away from nearby sandbars, wrecks, and treacherous currents, the lighthouse is the only one in the state still open to the public. The lighthouse has a height restriction, so kids might not be able to climb to the top. The climb features many steps as well as rest areas along the way. • Beautiful (especially the south end driftwood area), accessible, easy well-equipped fishing pier. A nice day's outing.

  • If you're a fan of lighthouses, this one is a beauty! Very nice surroundings with a park for kids and beautiful beach that's just a short walk. Grounds and the lighthouse are well-preserved and it's one of the few that allows you to climb to the top.
  • Make reservations online if you want to guarantee your spot. It costs $2 per person. If you didn't reserve online, bring cash, or pay at the gift shop after you've gotten your name on the list. 6 people allowed inside at a time. Climb at your own pace. Informational placards at every level. The observation deck is one level below the lens, so you can't get close to the lens, but it's a nice climb to a wonderful 360 view. I'll do it again next time I visit, it was that fun.
