Create an itinerary including Hunting Island State Park
Stretching over 2,000 hectares (5,000 acres), Hunting Island State Park is home to picturesque beaches, a maritime forest, and a variety of wildlife. Begin by picking up some general information about the park from the visitor center. The center connects with an extensive trail system and is just a short distance from several beach access points. Set out on the highly recommended 9.8 km (6.1 mi) loop trail to wander through the forest, along the lagoon, and to the marsh boardwalk--a great area for spotting wildlife. You can learn more about the island's history and ecosystem and see some live animals up close at the nature center. Consider climbing up the park's 19th-century lighthouse for views of the ocean, beach, and marshland. • This is our 3rd visit to this South Carolina state park and it doesn’t disappoint! Our campsite was on the perimeter of the campground and backed up to the primitive campsites of which none were occupied during our visit The RV sites have electric and water, fire pit and picnic table and many are heavily wooded and private. Its more of a hard packed sand rather than gravel site for parking. The store has ice, firewood and other supplies. There’s a trail that you can walk to from the campsites as well as beach access. Other trails start from the 2 other entrances along Sea Island Parkway as well as a short hike on the sound side which connects small islands out in the marsh via boardwalks. That’s a great place for birding. We saw a river otter and 4 Bufflehead ducks hunting fish in the marsh. The trails all offer a variety of scenery from forest to marsh to beach including the ghost forest at the south end of the island. Its a photographer ‘s paradise !
  • Top campground just meters from beach — good facilities, clean, quiet — some fun trails for cycling/hiking — beware the mosquitoes!
