Patrick Henry's Scotchtown, Beaverdam

Scotchtown is best known as the home of Patrick Henry during the tumultuous years leading up to the American Revolution. He lived here from 1771-1778. It was at Scotchtown that he formulated the ideas for his famous “Liberty or Death” speech and it was from the house that he rode to St. John’s Church in Richmond on March 23, 1775 to deliver it.

Since being acquired by Preservation Virginia in 1958, the house has been restored to its appearance during Patrick Henry’s life. With a focus placed on Patrick Henry’s life and legacy, visitors can expect to experience a dialogue-based tour that discusses topics, such as liberty, human rights and revolution.

The site is open Friday through Sunday from March to December.

  • Beautiful grounds and great audio tour - which is free, but felt like tour guides were annoyed that we didn't want to pay for the home tour. Plus, foot traffic to enter/exit is forced through the gift shop so they can give you the stink eye on the way in and out. Definitely didn't feel welcome.
  • Very interesting and informative tour. The museum exhibit put Henry's life and influence on our Constitution and especially his contributions to the Bill of Rights into context (along with trends in European thinking about individualism and government) and show their continuing relevance throughout the history of the US and worldwide today.
