Maryland's only oceanfront park, Assateague State Park hosts water and land activities. Many come to watch the wild horses along the shallow waters of the marsh, and try to spot various bird species and red foxes. Hike or bicycle on trails along the edge of the marshland for wildlife viewing. Trails also lead past Rackliffe House, an 18th-century plantation that has been restored to its former glory. Beaches, camping, and fishing will keep you busy near the shore. To visit Assateague State Park and other attractions in Berlin, use our Berlin tour itinerary planner.

  • Asseteague Island is absolutely lovely. The long and wide white sand beach is a national treasure. The wild ponies, deer and other critters add to the magic. It’s a great family vacation destination.

  • Went for 3 days and had a great time! Each site has a driveway for vehicles (max 2 cars), picnic bench, fire pit and spots for tents. Bathhouse had indoor bathrooms, outdoor and indoor showers. Beach was right next to campsite and was only open to campers. Saw wild horses in the early morning around the camping areas. Would highly recommend and can't wait to go again!
  • We stayed at Site F150 for 3 nights at the end of April and it was a tremendous experience. A few notes: It was super windy (around 13+ mph) the first night, which required us to purchase a smaller/ lower tent in order to be able to keep it up and sleep in it. Extra/ more heavy duty stakes were an absolute must. We had to make adjustments, but it added to the adventure. The lack of shade is also very real (we discovered on our second day), even in April - something to be aware of when planning a visit. **Do all the nature walks, especially the one at the Welcome Center!** It was a welcome reprieve from the windy shore the first very chilly morning we were there and trying to stay warm. The horses were so cool. We kept our distance of course, but happened to catch a feisty encounter amongst the horse family in the National Park. The access to the ocean was really just incredible. Get up for the sunrise! It's worth it. We will be coming back.
