The zoo was incorporated and established as a non-profit 501 C (3) organization in 1982. It focuses on year-round wildlife native to Montana, the Rocky Mountains, and other cold temperature regions at or above the 45th Parallel. Indoor habitats include animals from around the world. The zoo hosts over 80,000 visitors per year. Canyon Creek runs through the center of the zoo's grounds, creating a natural and tranquil park-like setting. 2018 marked the establishment of the Yellowstone Arboretum located on the ZooMontana grounds, containing a large selection of native and non-native trees.

We attended a work event at the zoo and thought it was very inviting and charming. It is small and I think ideal for a young family or date night for couples.

A friend and I took the kids (4,4,9) they played on the jungle gym for a long time. It's shady and well kept. They loved the tigers, wolves and the red panda. My friend and I enjoyed looking at the flowers and plants (which are named with signs.. love that)!
I understand why some would call this zoo small. It is a fairly short walk around to all the exhibits and there are not many animals. HOWEVER, I found the placards with information far easier and more entertaining to read than most other zoos. What is really interesting is how they talk about each animals personality, history, and how to identify which one you are looking at. It brings an individuality to each animal that you will not see at other zoos. Reading the stories of where each animal came from (often it is a story of abuse or accident) will help children and adults empathize with the animals we share the Earth with. My favorite animals were the vultures Gomez and Lurch
