The Phelps Mansion Museum was built in 1870 for Sherman D. Phelps, a local Binghamton businessman, by architect, Isaac G. Perry. The "Gem" at 191 Court Street, now a historic house museum, is an exceptional example of the outstanding ability of Perry to coordinate into his designs beautiful rare woods, metal, and glass in the interior of the house. The restored mansard roof and cresting as well as the iron fence highlight the exterior of the museum. To plan Binghamton vacation without wasting time, ask Inspirock to design an itinerary.
Declared a national historic landmark in 1973, it was placed on the National Register of Historic American Buildings. In 2005 we received a provisional charter from the Board of Regents as a New York State museum.
The Phelps Mansion Museum will utilize and preserve its unique Victorian facility and collections to serve the public through regular tours, exhibits and programs emphasizing local history, education, literature, art and music.
