The garden features hundreds of species of woody and herbaceous plants from around the world showcased in various features: a multi-acre shade garden, “hot” perennial border, spectrum mixed border, xeriphytic garden, two water features including the Jane Andrews Memorial Stream Garden, Pavilion tent lawn and folly, the Meadow Garden (new in 2008), and the Peggy Lee Hahn Garden Pavilion (special events facility and staff offices, open weekdays 8am - 5pm). The current garden, including new construction, covers six acres. Founded in 1984 by Horticulture faculty Robert Lyons and Robert McDuffie as the Horticulture Gardens, it was renamed the Hahn Horticulture Garden in November 2004 in honor of Peggy L. Hahn, for the generous gift and bequest for expansion from T. Marshall and Peggy Hahn. Many garden components and structures have been designed and built by Hort faculty and students. Many people over the years have contributed to the garden: students, faculty, staff, community volunteers, nursery and greenhouse growers, landscapers, and so many more.

  • Love the gardens. My kids always have a fun time as well. Plenty of interesting things to look at and paths to explore.
  • The gardens were beautiful today. We had children there in April for Prom pictures and not alot of flowers in bloom, but today with all the beautiful flowers and crafty pieces throughout the garden our company from Roanoke and Florida thoroughly enjoyed the visit.
