  • We stopped here Dec 31, 2021 as I had read about the overwintering cranes. At home we see get excited about a couple mating pairs, but this was phenomenal. We got there just after sunrise. It was very cold - single digits - but I was enthralled. The drive through the refuge has several viewing areas. The birds liked some better than others of course. It wasn't crowded so you could just stop your car by the side of the road too. There were many photographers with expensive cameras who I'm sure got better photos than I did, but I just kept snapping photos and didn't want to leave. It's a good thing I didn't have to pay to get my digital pictures developed because many were terrible, but even with my cell phone I got some good shots. And the entire experience in 3D, with sound -WOW! I was giddy watching 20,000 sand hill cranes and what seems like almost that many snow geese (plus one poor pheasant who looked very out of place.) Even though my fingers were freezing, this was a once in a lifetime experience. I loved it.
  • It is open. Which is nice. Lot of sand hill cranes and snow geese. A nice place to see the birds.
