The site of Fort Independence, Castle Island connects to the mainland via a narrow strip of land. What once served as a strategic military location in the 17th century is now a year-round recreation area. The fort takes up a majority of the island, and a few wide paths encircle the outer walls. You can join a guided tour on weekends or enjoy a self-guided tour on weekdays. Castle Island reviews

The beach area and picnic table area itself was phenomenal. There are a lot of picnic tables and a really nice play area for kids. The fort is cool, and the sea wall walk affords some glorious views of the city and sunsets. The bathrooms were dirty and not maintained, and also had no soap to wash hands.
Wonderful place to visit. Nice path for running or walking. Bring your dogs and have some fun. Relaxing places with shade to enjoy a picnic or more. Fort opens at 12 pm. Lots of history and historical artifacts. Plenty of parking. Come early as spaces fill fast.
