Once upon a time, musicians, college students, suburban dance-clubbers, punk rockers, Red Sox fans, future legendary rock bands, graffiti artists, hip-hop kids, poseurs, gays, straights and professionals all intersected in a magical place called Kenmore Square. A kind, guitar playing homeless man named Mister Butch was dubbed it's "mayor" for more than a decade.

It was a meeting spot for thousands of people. Much like Times Square NYC in the early 80's, Kenmore Square has since been "cleaned up" by Boston University, but there was a time where counter-culture THRIVED in Kenmore Square. Punk rock kids gathered there, sports fans flocked there, and 18 year old freshmen were getting their first taste of freedom in a raw, city landscape.

You really had to be there to experience it. Fights in front of Pizza Pad at 2:30 in the morning contrasted with big hugs among friends meeting in front of Strawberries Records & Tapes the next day.

If this is the Kenmore Square YOU remember, please please feel free to share your memories, post photos, comment, and tell your friends to do the same. You may have been a college student by day, but for many, the "University of Life" was being taught in Kenmore Square. And for many it was the first semester of the school that you've never stop attending, no matter how many times you've moved since. For many, real life started here.

Mister Butch was born on September 11, 1951 and died suddenly in a traffic accident on July 12, 2007. Rest in peace old friend.
