Monument · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Installed on the Nevada side of Hoover Dam, Winged Figures of the Republic Statues symbolize the growth of a nation, the strength of community and mankind. Guarding the entrance to the dam, the two angel-like sentries are the work of Oskar J.W. Hansen, a Norwegian immigrant and former marine. This example of an Art Deco monument consists of two huge single-cast bronze figures, each 9 m (30 ft) high, and a 43 m (142 ft) tall flagpole between them. Notice a celestial map with a star chart on the terrazzo floor and five bas-reliefs on the elevator tower, depicting benefits of the dam. • Well executed statues at the Dam, by a marker and flagpole. They have an Art Deco vibe, like the rest of the Dam. You stop. You look. You move on.  more »
  • The mid-century modern style at the dam, including the statues, is pretty cool. The statues seem so out of place against the rock, but the whole thing is so artistic.  more »
