Schoolhouse Children's Museum and Learning Center, Boynton Beach

The Schoolhouse Children’s Museum & Learning Center is housed in one of the first schools in Boynton Beach. Originally known as simply Boynton School, the building was constructed in 1913 and replaced the small wooden one-room schoolhouse that was being used at the time. Built with sturdy concrete block construction, the “new” Boynton School contained two floors, six rooms, indoor plumbing and served as Boynton’s only school for the next fourteen years, throughout which attendance increased steadily. A principal and three teachers divided the classes by grade level to handle the increasing attendance – with teachers assigned to grades 1 through 8 and the principal assigned to teach grades 9 through 12.

Soon after, a high school was built in 1926 and opened in 1927 next door to the Boynton School, allowing it to become Boynton Elementary School. It operated until 1990 when it was no longer needed. It was then used for community programs.

In 1994 the Boynton Beach Elementary School was added to the National Register of Historic Places thanks to the efforts of the Boynton Beach Historical Society and local supporters. The Palm Beach County School Board transferred the title to the property to the City of Boynton Beach in 1994, which sparked a movement by local supporters to raise funds and create plans for the building to be restored an used as a children’s museum. A committee of supporters raised enough to place a South Florida history-based Children’s Museum located centrally in Boynton Beach. In 2001, the movement efforts were honored with the opening of the Schoolhouse Children’s Museum & Learning Center. Since its operation, hundreds of thousands of children and families have visited the museum, having the opportunity to enjoy and learn from its programs, services and exhibits.

  • Really awesome indoor play and educational area for my two year old. I think it would be great for ages 1-6/7? We just started going but are excited to attend some of the additional programs and events they host. It is a two story museum with 4-5 different themed areas. My toddler loved it. Something we could go to weekly and he would not get bored. We spent 2 hours there and he was having a wonderful time. Great, friendly staff. A gem for this area! I have a 6mo old as well. I would wear him in a cattier next time (I brought my stroller). It is all stroller accessible and there is stroller parking which is nice, but would definitely be easier to just wear him next time for moving around and chasing my toddler. We went on a Friday afternoon and it was no crowded at all. I imagine weekend of course would be a bit more crowded but totally worth it for the kids.
  • We had our son's 5th birthday party at the Schoolhouse Children's Museum today. It was amazing. From scheduling the party to the party itself. Everything was very smooth and well organized. The party room is large, which is not the norm. I love that the whole place has character and used to be a real school house. There are so many great activities to explore here for the kids. The staff helped us bring our party supplies up from the car with a cart and helped us bring them back down. They helped set up and serve food too. Very friendly and accommodating. Part is 2 hours long but the kids can stay and play afterwards in the rest of the museum. The price is better than those other play places that people generally have kids birthday parties at and, believe me, this place beats them all. All said and done, great experience at a place the kids loved and we've been taking my son to since he was 2. Would definitely recommend.
