Historic Dumas Brothel

45 East Mercury Street

Butte, Montana 59701

The Dumas is an American brothel built during the Victorian era in 1890, in what we like to call "Brotheleze" style architecture. With her amazing intact features ranging from high class parlor to low-level crib system, the Dumas is America's longest running house of "ill-repute". The Dumas was built for one purpose -as a brothel to serve the predominately male population of Butte, MT at the turn of the 20th century. It operated illegally for 92 years from 1890 to 1982 and thankfully, it is still standing today...

In the 1970s, the Dumas was listed on the National Register of Historic Places where it remains listed as an active "bordello".

It is a highly significant contributor to the Butte-Anaconda National Historic District because it is the last of the grand brothels and parlor-houses that crowded Butte Montana’s once “thriving” Red-Light district.

During its hey-day, Butte’s Red-Light district consisted of many brothels, parlor houses, and bordellos that spanned an entire six (6) block area in Uptown Butte, MT. Today the Dumas is the "last house on the line" -quite literally. The Dumas stands out as a lonely structure situated among vacant lots and is the final testament and reality to what became of Butte’s entire Red-Light corridor.

The Dumas is home to a great deal of unexplained phenomena. Spirits have roamed her halls for decades. The spirits of the Dumas are incredibly intellectual and baffling even to experts who have investigated the location... It is difficult to describe the essence of the haunting's that have persisted at the Dumas since the 1950's when Madam Elinore Knott was found dead in her luxurious 2nd floor suite.

Elinore's image is among many others that have been captured on video, E.V.P., and photographs taken by paranormal researcher's and countless tourists who have visited the Dumas. The spirits at the Dumas evoke great emotion and seem to enjoy provoking skeptics, oftentimes showing up in the basement and the Madam's suite upstairs.

The Dumas is now a museum offering tours of the historic brothel, ripe with telling accounts from her remarkable past, and showcasing the incredible architectural features, antiques, relics, and other artifacts that are all authentic from the days it operated as a brothel.

We offer tours year-round by appointment and are open for the summer season Memorial day through Labor day (restoration's permitting). *Please be advised that our #1 goal is the preservation and restoration of the historic building and we do not always have consistent hours due to the nature of the construction process. We hope to complete the major restorations by Spring of 2015, becoming fully operational as a unique bed & breakfast while continuing the brothel museum on a permanent basis at that time.

We have a small gift/souvenir shop that features Dumas Brothel mementos and keepsakes such as T-shirts, sweat-shirts, magnets, poster's, pin-ups, pint & shot glasses, postcards, and other memorabilia for sale at fair prices. All proceeds from tours & gift sales are used to fund the ongoing preservation & restoration of the Dumas Brothel.

A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE VISITING:

1. Our FOREMOST priority is to restore and preserve the Dumas... As such, we are not able to keep consistent hours for tours. While we do our best to accommodate everyone who wishes to visit, we cannot always accomplish this as the Dumas is under construction.

2. ALWAYS CALL AHEAD if you plan to visit from out of town!!! The restoration process creates many unforeseeable issues that will require us to close, oftentimes without notice. We welcome your visit and strive to accommodate everyone, so PLEASE CALL AHEAD to insure we are open BEFORE coming from out of town.

3. We want to thank you for your understanding and support as we make progress on the Dumas restoration... The scope of this project is extraordinary and has proven to be a challenge in every way imaginable... To maintain the Dumas and protect it from further deterioration is an endless job. Thank you again for understanding this and realizing the magnitude of what we are doing to restore the Dumas Brothel.

4. If you wish to contribute to this noteworthy cause, contact us through email at: thedumasbrothel@live.com or message us here on Facebook. Thanks again! ~Historic Dumas Brothel.
