Lake Tahoe, Tahoe City

#52 of 609 in Nature in California
Must see · Water Body · Nature / Park
The long shoreline of Lake Tahoe offers a family-friendly resort atmosphere on its California side, and a vibrant nightlife of high-rise casinos on the Nevada side. One of the country’s deepest bodies of water (measuring 501 m [1,645 ft] at maximum depth), the lake is nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and offers a range of activities throughout the warmer months of the year, including swimming, boating, kayaking, windsurfing, hiking, and camping. Winter brings lots of snow, transforming the mountain slopes surrounding the lake into popular ski and snowboarding destinations. You can start your day backpacking through the wilderness around the lake and end your evening with a meal and a show at a casino hotel in nearby Reno.
