Star Hill Golf Club, Cape Carteret

3-1/2 Stars Golf Digest's "Places to Play"

We drain better than ANY course on the Crystal Coast. We are NEVER cart path only.

Star Hill Golf Club features the Champions Club for meals and social gatherings. The Champions Club is available to the public for private parties, wedding receptions, anniversary parties, or other occasions.

Star Hill was named long before there was ever a golf course by that name. The developers of this club, W.B. McLean, George F. Spell and W.A. Shackelford were asked by several people . . . old timers . . . never to change the name because Star Hill was the legendary name of the area for hundreds of years. According to Indian lore a "star," very likely a meteor, was seen to crash near where the first tee now is. This area, historically called Star Hill, indicates by its topography that a meteor actually had impacted thousands of years ago. The impact opened up deep underground water sources, creating a bog which has been fashioned into the present pond.

  • We were here in March. We were able to get right on the course with no problem. For use the course was brown, but we really liked the layout. Very pretty. At first we were to play the Lakes, but.....  more »
  • Fair to good condition overall. All three 9’s are super easy, but the rating tells you that. Nice place to take kids or beginners and still be able to keep pace up. Greens were fair to rough but still playable. Tees were great, nicely mown and picked up. Fairways closely mown and very wide.
  • Played on August 10th. Most of the greens on the pine course had no grass, overall the greens were not good. Fairways were good. All of the water coolers we saw were empty. Clubhouse staff wasn’t very friendly but the cart lady was super. Not worth the price.
