Beauty and wonder; above and below

Rocky slopes and canyons, cactus, grass, thorny shrubs, and the occasional tree, who could guess at the hidden treasures deep underground? Beneath this rugged land are more than 119 known caves - all formed when sulfuric acid dissolved the surrounding limestone. To plan your visit, go to the park's official website: .

A variety of cave tours are available—from the self-guided Natural Entrance and Big Room routes to guided tours that range from walking the paved trails of Scenic Rooms, called the Kings Palace Tour, to crawling through narrow passageways in Hall of the White Giant or Spider Cave. But the fun and beauty are not only underground. In the park Visitor Center, you will find educational exhibits, ranger led talks and programs, a bookstore run by non-profit partner, Western National Parks Association, and a restaurant, gift shop and kennel operated by park concessioner, Carlsbad Caverns Trading Company. Outdoors there are opportunities for hiking, backcountry camping, picnicking, and from May to October, watching the incredible exodus of Brazilian free-tail bats out of Carlsbad Cavern at dusk.

  • My last visit is close to 50 yrs! Bring your park pass! A light jacket and a camera! Non-skid shoes. No pets except for service dogs. There is a holding kennel for pets- don't leave them in the vehicles! Two ways to enter the caverns-the cave opening, is longer. The elevator to the Big Room. Great formations! Just imagine how long it took to be like they are now. There are other tours for the more adventurous-but call ahead as some are closed. Visit during the warmer months and take the extra time and watch the bats come out! That's my next trip! There are some areas in the Big Room self tour that are wheelchair denied due to sloping. The view above ground is spectacular too!
  • Aubrey Brown and Angelina Guerra we’re our tour guides today for the lower cave tour, and yesterday I had Aubrey Brown as a tour guide for the King’s Palace tour. Aubrey Brown has a way of bringing the cave to life with her stunning ability to tell fantastical stories that completely captivate you. Angelina had a way of connecting with you that made you feel immediately welcome and part of the group. Aubrey was amazing and sweet, if I get a chance to go on another tour here during my stay, I hope I get lucky enough to get these excellent tour guides! Thank you so much again Aubrey and Angelina!!! You made yesterday and today unforgettable!!!!
