The northeast and west sides of Sugarloaf drain into the South Branch of the Carrabassett River, which flows into the Kennebec River, and into the Gulf of Maine. The southeast side of Sugarloaf drains into Rapid Stream, then into the West Branch of the Carrabassett River.
The Appalachian Trail (AT), a 2,170 mi (3,490 km) National Scenic Trail from Georgia to Maine, passes within a mile of the summit, skirting the peak to the west, and the summit is reached by a 0.6 mi (0.97 km) side trail. This side trail, and a trail down the east side of Sugarloaf, were originally part of the AT, which has been relocated down the north side of the mountain to the west of the ski slopes. Sugarloaf, a major ski resort is located on the north side of the mountain.
Sugarloaf Mountain reviews
I enjoyed the view, peaceful area, unplugging from city life. Big jacuzzi was appreciated since many amenities were closed. Rules due to COVID-19 were in place. Love the gym equipments. Only three... more »
I've had the wonderful opportunity to ski most of the north east from Hunter to Jay peak and many in between. I'm happy to report Sugarloaf is my favorite east coast mountain. Fantastic challenging terrain, fun cruisers and little old school vibe....love it!
All around one of the best mountains to ski at in Maine. Lots of terrain to choose from for all difficulty levels. A lot of locals ski here so the area has a friendly atmosphere. The lifties and staff are friendly and helpful. They make a lot of snow throughout the season so there's always snow around. Conditions are usually good but avoid skiing after a thaw and freeze cycle. It can also be windy so always check the weather forecast before heading out. Lots of restaurants and shops around for when the mountain is closed. In the summer they have ziplining and scenic lift rides. All around Sugarloaf is a great four seasons resort. I've been skiing here since I was little and always come back every year.
