Dignity, Chamberlain

Dignity (a.k.a. Dignity of Earth & Sky) is a sculpture on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River near Chamberlain, South Dakota. The 50-foot (15.24 meter) high stainless steel statue by South Dakota artist laureate Dale Lamphere depicts an Indigenous woman in Plains-style dress receiving a star quilt. According to Lamphere, the sculpture honors the culture of the Lakota and Dakota peoples who are indigenous to South Dakota. Assisting Lamphere were sculptors Tom Trople, Jim Maher, Andy Roltgen, and Grant Standard. Automotive paint expert Brook Loobey assisted with the colors for the quilt, and Albertson Engineering of Rapid City, SD ensured the sculpture would endure the strong winds common in the area.

  • Grand statue welcoming you to the vast expanse of South Dakota as you descend on I90 to the beautiful lake Chamberlain. Wonderful picnic spot! Ask me about why Sakajewea has a quilt block on here.....  more »
  • I have been there twice and once in July 2003 and in June 2019 and I definitely recommend that place to go to and look at the scenery and especially the Missouri River.  more »
  • Very beautiful statue perched on the hill top. Perfect place to stop in, walk around and had really large parting spots for the RV. Bathrooms and information readily available. Did not disappoint.
  • Beautiful statue along the freeway rest area. It overlooks a river and there are multiple bridges below. There are picnic tables also. Good place to stop on a long road trip.
