Dignity (a.k.a. Dignity of Earth & Sky) is a sculpture on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River near Chamberlain, South Dakota. The 50-foot (15.24 meter) high stainless steel statue by South Dakota artist laureate Dale Claude Lamphere depicts an Indigenous woman in Plains-style dress receiving a star quilt. According to Lamphere, the sculpture honors the culture of the Lakota and Dakota peoples who are indigenous to South Dakota. Assisting Lamphere were sculptors Tom Trople, Jim Maher, Andy Roltgen, and Grant Standard. Automotive paint expert Brook Loobey assisted with the colors for the quilt, and Albertson Engineering of Rapid City, SD ensured the sculpture would endure the strong winds common in the area.

  • Just pull off the Interstate and see this magnificent statue honoring Native culture. Beautiful view of the River below as well. Unfortunately the shop was closed when we stopped in.

  • Well worth the stop! This is a very nice rest area which includes an interpretive center of Lewis and Clark’s journey. The overlooks of the Missouri river are breathtaking. One of the nicest rest...

  • This was a very beautiful statue lit up at night or in n all her glory during the day our whole family really enjoyed seeing her!! Also inside the rest stop in the same parking lot as the statue is a lewis and Clark museum for free very cute well worth the stop 🛑 the door feeder even gave her a voice a bag that had little books and then with crossword puzzles little items it was very nice! I definitely recommend ❣️ also it's accessible from either side of the highway so no matter which way you're headed you can catch this amazing free stop!!
  • This extreemly clean rest area (excellent parking for semi, RV, and cars), has so much to offer. YES the "Dignity " statue is here and is really beautiful from all sides. But take some time to review the Lewis and Clark exhibit that gives you an idea of their travels in the area. Also Take time to walk the short trails to view the river and the RR Bridge for some spectacular views. There is so much here that it is MUCH MORE than a rest stop or a tribute to the Spirit of America. We even had a picnic in the very clean shelters. Our "quick stop" was for over 1 hour.
