Charleston City Market, Charleston

4.0
Established in the 1790s, Charleston City Market is one of the country's oldest public markets and hosts more than 300 entrepreneurs. Begin your visit at the historic market hall, an impressive Greek Revival-style structure built 1841. Admire its brownstone stucco and green ironwork before shopping for souvenirs and treats. Items with the Certified Authentic Handmade in Charleston seal are entirely locally made. Market stalls extend four city blocks away from the hall and include an array of goods. You'll find about 50 artists with sweetgrass baskets, a traditional African-American craft. These tightly woven baskets have been made for centuries and are a popular--and useful--souvenir. • City Market was a fun place to shop and visit. Unique gifts and crafts were available at reasonable prices. We returned each day to make sure we did not overlook a vendor. Vendors were friendly and we...  more »

  • We absolutely enjoyed our trip there. I had never been there and was really excited. We took a carriage ride and I must say the driver, our host, was fabulous! He was funny and looked like he really knew what he was talking about. The only drawback was, apparently the Head of the operation, was to harsh on the carriages. He missed at everybody just because he could BUT he did it in front of people which was wrong in so many ways!! Other than that, it was totally informative and just downright fun! The merchants market had the most unique things for sale and not expensive for the quality. We went to a very quaint little cafe that was really tiny but had great hamburgers. In defense of them, they were out of a lot of things but they were in the midst of beginning renovations.
  • It was a very interesting shopping corridor with many vendors and different types of wares. Note that there is an indoor store section towards the front on the building that does not allow dogs inside. The vendor steaks had everything from paintings, clothes, wooden tools, and puzzles. The sweet shops that run along the market have amazing handmade candy and sweets. There was plenty of parking about 1 block away and was an easy walk.
  • Such a great time! They have something for everyone at this mart. I had to stop myself from buying tons of stuff. Parking can be a little difficult if the parking lot across the street is full. They also have two wonderful food places.
  • Absolutely beautiful hotel. The staff were top notch. Free shuttles to the beach and downtown were perfect and we enjoyed the Tikki bar and Reel bar for drinks and bites. The rooms were very roomy with comfortable beds and jetted tub. Gorgeous pools and hot tub and I loved the rocking chairs throughout. The one thing that I would recommend to make it even better would be a breakfast included but we were able to experience some great food though.
  • Great selection of handmade crafts. Never a dull moment. Super packed and always hustling. Wouldn’t recommend going in the summer if you don’t like the heat. May be more enjoyable in the fall or winter. Very friendly people.
