Established in the 1790s, Charleston City Market is one of the country's oldest public markets and hosts more than 300 entrepreneurs. Begin your visit at the historic market hall, an impressive Greek Revival-style structure built 1841. Admire its brownstone stucco and green ironwork before shopping for souvenirs and treats. Items with the Certified Authentic Handmade in Charleston seal are entirely locally made. Market stalls extend four city blocks away from the hall and include an array of goods. You'll find about 50 artists with sweetgrass baskets, a traditional African-American craft. These tightly woven baskets have been made for centuries and are a popular--and useful--souvenir. The day market is full of wares for sale including hand-made jewelry and art. Find unique buys and thoughtful gifts for your loved ones or yourself. The night market open on weekends is dedicated to local artists that sell their handmade artwork, jewelry, and crafts. I always receive compliments on my jewelry that I buy at the market. Prices range from very reasonable to high-end. You must visit the market in Charleston!

Yes it's a tourist zone. Yes it's always packed. And yes, you can find a lot of the stuff for lower prices other places. That said, it's one of my favorite places in Charleston. It's a beautiful, historic place with a lot of vendors and shops. You can find a ton of Charleston centric gifts, plus it's beautiful. It's one of my favorite stops in Charleston to people and horse watch. For me it's one of those places that I always stop by and usually find some kind of home crafted gift to bring home.
