Raccoon Mountain Caverns, Chattanooga

#4 of 18 in Parks in Chattanooga
Cave · Nature / Park
Go on an underground journey through Raccoon Mountain Caverns, one of Tennessee’s greatest natural wonders. Two types of tours are available. The Crystal Palace Tour is a guided walk through lighted pathways in the front area of the cave. The guide will explain the history of the cave as you admire the geological formations. For the more daring, the Wild Cave Expedition takes you deep inside the undeveloped portions of the cave--without trails, handrails, or electric lights. Trained guides will lead you through chambers, tunnels, streams, and waterfalls, and you'll have the option of staying overnight in the cave. You will be provided with all the necessary equipment, including helmets and lights. Wild Cave Expedition tours need to be booked in advance, but reservations are not necessary for the Crystal Palace option. The temperature inside the cave is consistently around 15 C (60 F), so make sure to dress appropriately. To visit Raccoon Mountain Caverns on your trip to Chattanooga, use our Chattanooga visit site.

  • Landon was a very informative guide. He has personality, knowledge and interacts well with young children. My family took his tour a few days ago and thoroughly enjoyed it!  more »
  • Great tour by Landon (or Brandon) can't remember. He was very informative. I was worried about being claustrophobic but I was not at all. There is a walk way, steps, and handrails so it was all...  more »
  • Loved it! Went on guided cave tour with our 4 year old daughter and 3 year old niece- even the kids loved it. Our guide was Judah, he was excellent!! And it was easy walking even for me, an 8.5 months pregnant lady. The entire thing only took 45 minutes. Would highly recommend!! Also, the cave is decorated really nicely with Christmas lights and decor currently which made it super fun for the kids and very pretty. Loved it.
  • Panned for rocks here. Guaranteed to get certain stones in the different bags purchased. Bags start at around $7.95 and go up to about $35.00. I purchased 1 of each and was VERY pleased with the large amount of beautiful rocks and stones that were in each bag. We even got many arrowheads and shark teeth! Well worth the trip and money. We've been to many gem mining places and this by far gives the nicest and largest amount of stones. A hidden gem!
