Completed in 1897 as Chicago’s first central public library, the building was designed to impress and to prove that Chicago had grown into a sophisticated metropolis. The country’s top architects and craftsmen used the most sumptuous materials, such as rare imported marbles, polished brass, fine hardwoods, and mosaics of Favrile glass, mother-of-pearl and colored stone, to create an architectural showplace. Located on the south side of the building, the world’s largest stained glass Tiffany dome ― 38 feet in diameter with some 30,000 pieces of glass ― was restored to its original splendor in 2008. On the north side of the building is a 40-foot-diameter dome with some 50,000 pieces of glass in an intricate Renaissance pattern, designed by Healy & Millet.
In 1991, the building was established as the Chicago Cultural Center by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, the nation's first and most comprehensive free municipal cultural venue. Every year, the Chicago Cultural Center presents hundreds of free international, national, regional and local artists, musicians and performers, providing a showcase where the public can enjoy and learn about the arts.
Come for the beauty, stay for the events.

Absolutely beautiful building with special touches (Tiffany domed ceiling is just one example), free and open to the public. We stumbled across this building looking for something else. Incredibly pre... more »

We scored and went out to walk, explore, and learn a lot with Janice who taught us a great deal of the history of this beautiful city and its buildings. The truth is that during the 60' we enjoyed a lot. The tours are free of charge and the level of knowledge and the good predisposition of Janice made this "free walking tour" something very advisable for visitors to this city!
Beautiful place and always free. There was a film crew filming an episode of Chicago Fire so some of the museum was closed off when I was there. Would have loved to see all of the exhibits but admittedly it was neat to see the crew! The exhibits were nice and the center is in a great location. I would love to come back and I'd recommend this place to anyone in the area.
This building is one of the coolest things about Chicago. The exhibits are always interesting, and the building is warm and well-kept. The best part is that it's totally free, even for most of their public events. Even if you're only passing through Chicago be sure to stop in and catch a glimpse of all the incredible artistic endeavours being put on display at the Chicago Cultural Center.
