Free and open to the public since 1887, the Newberry is an independent research library whose world-famous collection is available to scholars, genealogists, and lifelong learners alike. Anyone who is at least 14 years old can sign up for a reader's card and, in just minutes, have history right at their fingertips--whether it's in the form of a medieval manuscript, an atlas of hand-colored maps, or a selection of letters between two American authors.

These unique primary sources are part of a vast collection of more than 1.6 million books, 5 million manuscript pages, and 600,000 maps that the Newberry continually preserves, augments, and makes accessible in a variety of ways.

Beyond our reading rooms, the Newberry provides learning opportunities for the intellectually curious through free exhibitions and public programs that include lectures, panel discussions, and theatrical and dance performances.

We are a research library, but we are also something more: a community of learning that flourishes within our walls and well beyond them. This community is made up of the thousands of people who visit our building each year to take a class, see an exhibition, meet an author, or trace their family’s history; it also includes our many users across the globe who explore our digital collections and engage with us online.

  • I love the beautiful exhibits in this place. I love to read my books and the place is so relaxing. I spent my weekend in this quiet place. I would love to recommend this to everyone.
  • I went to two separate wedding ceremonies and receptions here and both were great. It’s a great space with a historic feel yet nothing feels outdated. The reception hall is beautiful and has plenty of space for a wedding with around 100 guests. The food is great and is served by a friendly staff. Not to mention the location is great - right in the city of Chicago. You’ll probably have to pay for parking but there’s plenty nearby and also the Library does validate your ticket in order to receive a discount. Just don’t try the discount if you’re using SpotHero.
