  • This is a really spectacular quick stop and the paintings are preserved quite well. I was worried about the road but it was totally passable and I was able to drive right up -- even with a light drizz...  more »
  • A driveable, though a little rough, road will take you to these murals painted on the rocks. Beautiful artwork. Can’t imagine how he managed to paint on the high steep cliff! Worth the drive.  more »
  • Have done this road from "both ends" several times(from Big Wash Rd, up and over the bench where campgrounds and hiking trail are, then down to the murals). If you don't have capable, smaller(Jeep, Tacoma, 4Runner etc)4x4, and off-road driving ability, you can simply drive to murals by going through the town of Chloride. Cool little mining town w friendly folks. The road continuing up past the murals used to be app. 1/4 mile long boulder field. Now cleared away. However there are still 3 major obstacles in the road up to the bench/campgrounds that have to be overcome. Full-size 4x4s--forget it!! Too narrow and too tight. Big Wash Rd. tops out at about 6000 ft. Great views and mine sites reward those who perservere. Campgrounds have pit toilets and tabels. Those wanting a pleasant dirt road drive/climb to clean air and "juniper forested" surroundings can come up from Big Wash Rd end. Very nice day trip or, pay the camp fees and stay longer.
  • Worth the trek to the murals. It's a rough road in a car, but trucks or AWD should be fine. You can park below and walk up. Follow the arrows/ painted rocks. There is a moderate elevation gain.
