Create an itinerary including National Underground Railroad Freedom Center
National Underground Railroad Freedom Center explores the topics of slavery, inequality, and freedom, paying particular attention to the history of slavery in the United States and the role of the Underground Railroad. The center sits on the banks of the Ohio River, which thousands of slaves crossed as they fled the slave states of the South for the relative safety of Ohio during the 19th century. Take in the impressive collection of items, multimedia exhibits, and personal stories relating to slavery, the civil rights movement, and contemporary freedom struggles. You can go inside one of the premier artifacts here: a restored slave pen built in 1839. Note that the center has no snack or drink facilities, so bring your own if you are planning a long visit. • Incredibly beautiful, moving, and well curated museum with intentional designs of every aspect of the space. I was lucky enough to go on a recent third Sunday, which are free, and easily spent over 2 hours engrossed in the concept of freedom. As they apply this in a modern sense, and remind us of sacrifices of those who risk everything for a chance at freedom on the underground railroad I am continually in appreciation of just how well designed the center is and how vital their message continues to be.
  • I had an amazing experience visiting this place. So much information that spark conversation and thoughts about our country. I highly recommend visiting this place. I spent about 3 1/2 hours here and feel like I missed some things. I will definitely return.
