Downtown Cleveland is the central business district of the City of Cleveland and Northeast Ohio, United States. It is the economic and symbolic center of the Cleveland-Akron-Canton, OH Combined Statistical Area, which holds a regional population of 3.5 million. Reinvestment in the area in the mid-1990s spurred a rebirth that continues to this day, with over $3.5 billion in residential and commercial developments in the 2010s. In the 2010 Census, the population of Downtown Cleveland totaled 11,693, growing from 9,599 in 2000 and 7,261 in 1990. It had the largest percent population growth for a neighborhood the city of Cleveland in the 2010 Census and continues to be the most populated downtown in the state of Ohio. More than 800 residential units opened in 2012 and 2013, with over 1000 residential units expected to open in 2014 and 2015.
Downtown Cleveland workforce numbers over 100,000, and the central business district contains over 16 million square feet of rentable office space. Both these commercial statistics lead the state of Ohio. Within one square mile radius of Downtown Cleveland is a total work force of 124,000.
In 2005, Brookings Institution called it one of America's "Emerging Downtowns" due to the residential growth of 32.2% growth over the time period. Forbes included Downtown Cleveland in its 2012 list of "15 U.S. Cities Emerging Downtown" list citing the $3.5 billion in new development.
