#2 of 11 in Historic Sites in Cleveland
Cemetery · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Known locally as "Cleveland's Outdoor Museum," Lake View Cemetery houses a memorial dedicated to president James Garfield and an ornate Neoclassical chapel, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A quiet place for a picnic or a stroll, the garden is located in the "Heights" area of Cleveland, notable for offering unobstructed views of Lake Erie. Founded in 1869 and modeled after renowned English and French graveyards of the Victorian era, the cemetery offers a variety of walking, bus, and self-guided tours of its grounds and two notable structures. As you walk through the cemetery, look for the Rockefeller family obelisk, made of the largest piece of granite ever cut for memorialization purposes. • Surprisingly, Lake View Cemetery in Cleveland, Ohio is not only a cemetery, but a tourist destination as well! After having lunch in Little Italy, my daughter suggested we visit Lake View Cemetery. Living just 45 minutes away, I had never even heard of this much visited cemetery.Lake View Cemetery was founded in 1869 by a group of Cleveland businessmen and is the resting place for many significant people including James A. Garfield, our 20th President of the United States.Visitors come from near and far to view the spectacular architecture and park-like grounds. Visitors can take a self-guided tour or take a tour by trolley.
  • I’m a John D. Rockefeller fan and wanted to see his resting place. The cemetery is an excellent place to wander.
