Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Buffalo Bill Dam was the tallest in the world when it was finished in 1910. Walk to the top of the concrete arch-gravity dam named after Wild West showman William "Buffalo Bill" Cody. At the visitor center, you can watch a short film, take a self-guided audio tour, and explore the black-and-white photos of the dam's early construction. You'll discover what makes the dam sturdy and view the waters--which supply more than 37,635 hectares (93,000 acres) of farmland--from the top. If you don't feel like walking from the parking lot to the visitor center, there's a complimentary shuttle service. Work out when and for how long to visit Buffalo Bill Dam and other Cody attractions using our handy Cody trip itinerary planning app.

Excellent place! They will come to the parking area and we pick you up in a golf cart and take you to the dam and education center or you can walk on the pavement to the areas. When you are ready to return to the car, you can walk back or ride back in a golf cart. Easy stop for pressed pennies or to get your passport canceled. Very knowledgeable staff and volunteers. Small book store to shop if you would like. You can walk across the dam and get photos of either side. This is a quick 1-2 hour stop to give you a break on the road from Cody, Wyoming heading into the eastern entrance to Yellowstone.

The Buffalo Bill dam is only a short ten minute drive from Cody and is one HECK of a view. Not only are the views of the reservoir of the damn itself just gorgeous, but the sense of vertigo you get from that narrow steep drop on the back side of the dam is half terrifying, in a good way! What a marvel of engineering done decades and decades and decades ago! The visitors center is chock full of great information and fascinating exhibits. From a chief engineer with nothing more than a high school education to the original vision by Buffalo Bill to harness the power of the river, definitely worth a stop!
