Besides gorgeous views, there is an interesting and sad story behind this place. In 1877, 700 Nez Perce Indians with two thousand horses escaped from 200 American soldiers pursuing them, avoided at the same time an ambush on the pass, set by another army detachment, and broke into the Great Plains. A month later the Indians would still be killed at the Battle of the Bear Paw:((((, but here they did manage to fool the American troops.
