Pike's Peak - America's Mountain, Colorado Springs

On the front range of the Rocky Mountains, Pike's Peak - America's Mountain stands as one of Colorado's 53 '14ers'--mountains rising more than 14,000 ft (4,300 m). Visitor centers are located at 9.7 km (6 mi), 19.3 km (12 mi), and the peak's summit. These offer information, gift shops, and restaurants. To get to the summit, travel by car or train. The attraction's highway is notable for its dangerous twists and turns, as well as its unpaved, winding ascent on the last push up to the peak--but experienced drivers will enjoy the challenge. Or consider a ride on the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway, which takes you to the summit on a historical set of tracks. • Great place! The views and experience was well worth the 15 hour drive to get there. Would recommend to anyone who has never been.  more »
  • The drive was breathtaking. The Park Ranger advised us to take the first shuttle instead of waiting for the last one, and we tried, but the parking attendant would not let us pull in that parking lot....  more »

  • The drive up Pikes Peak is amazing. The views are spectacular and hard to put into words. The last couple of miles you park and they shuttle you to the top where there is a gift shop and place to eat.
  • Great view, but construction can make it muddy. 14,000+ feet is a big difference in elevation and you might get altitude sickness. Drink water. I didn't and had a migraine later. The view is still totally worth it. If you aren't used to winding roads, don't drive up. There are stopping points to catch a bus the rest of the way up. Stopped at mile 13 and rode up. The driver was great on the way down about telling history and interesting facts. Great experience from a Texan perspective. The gift shop and restaurant are crammed and expensive (what isn't at this elevation?). The higher in elevation, the higher the price. My 13 year old was impressed with the views tho. Bring a jacket or hoodie, it gets chilly no matter what.
