Stretching 110 km (70 mi) along the coast featuring prairies, dunes, and wildlife, Padre Island National Seashore represents the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world. Most of the area is undeveloped and accessible only to four-wheel-drive vehicles. The park offers swimming, fishing, camping, surfing, and wildlife-watching opportunities. About 45 percent of all North American bird species can be spotted at the park. Start your tour at the visitor center, where you can also see exhibits, get food and water supplies, and obtain camping licenses. Choose among the numerous RV or tent camping spots in the wilderness, or at the beach. Not much to say about a beach. A storm was rolling in but we paid the fee and had a nice walk on the beach before the downpour hit. STILL had a great time. We were making memories.

Drive onto the beach and set yourself up for fun in the sun! Absolutely loved it here. Very touristy and fun area. Lots of shopping and restaurants.

We left the entrance of the National Park with the plan to drive all the way to the cut, about 60 or do miles, in our new Bronco. My average fuel mileage at the time was around 16mpg. I had about 240 miles to empty according to my dash reading, so I didn't think we'd have any problem getting there and back. However, past about the 20 Mike marker, the sand was deep and like sugar, so I switched to 4WD. My fuel mileage plummeted and by the time I reached the 45 Mike marker I barely had 120 miles to empty and decided it was prudent to head back at that point. We did make it to Big Shell though and filled our bags with some real beauties. After an hour or so of playing in the surf and having lunch, we headed back to civilization. We will go again, but I'll be packing in extra fuel. You are truly alone out there, so be prepared. But the beauty of the water is well worth the trip. Park Rangers do patrol the area, so if you get in trouble, help should be nearby. I wouldn't depend on that though. Go prepared to enjoy being totally alone and make sure you can perform basic first-aid if the need arises. No cell service period after about the 30 Mike marker. Have fun and be safe. It will be a memory you will cherish for years to come.
Loved this beach. It’s a bit far to go but we’ll worth it. The water it more clear. An almost green at the beach an deep blue further out. They also have restroom an showers. Not very packed. But you have to pay 10 bucks per car load. But it’s fine. But definitely will be coming here again.
