The gardens can be traced to 1987 when a first cottage garden (1 acre) and nature trail opened in Corpus Christi. Today's gardens, however, are on a different site that opened in 1996. The gardens have been actively developed since that time.
Major exhibits now include an arid garden; Exhibit House with bromeliads, cycads, cacti, and succulents; hibiscus garden; hummingbird garden; landscape demonstration beds; orchid house with more than 3000 orchids; a major collection of more than 100 plumeria varieties; contemporary rose garden with a large pavilion; sensory garden; and water garden.
The site also contains a mesquite nature trail through 30 acres (120,000 m2) of brush. It features some 35 species of woody trees and shrubs, herbs, grasses, and cacti, as well as white-tailed deer, collared peccaries, and coyotes.
South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center reviews
I took my mom (she was a first time visitor), my 7 year old boy, and my 4 month old baby girl today. Although it was INSANELY hot, everything was still so beautiful! The birds are always fun, too. I just really wanted to leave this review because of our outstanding service today! Normy was extremely kind and helpful. We just wanted to recognize her and thank her for being so great! *Side note* The Botanical Gardens holds a super special place in my heart, because my husband proposed to me there 2 years ago!* (I attached a picture :)
There is a little bit of everything here.....great roses, flowers, birds and reptiles! The young man getting the food ready for the birds when we were there was very informative on the snakes and their habits or back stories and age. We enjoyed the nice walk on the back part of the property and discovered a lot of birds on the pond. It is well worth the visit. The gardens are well maintained and there are several secret little garden areas that have bird feeders in them OR something interesting like a sculptor. Lots of educational signs along the pathways.
