Historic General Dodge House, Council Bluffs

#5 of 18 in Things to do in Council Bluffs
Architectural Building · Historic Site
The fourteen room, three story mansion stands on a high terrace overlooking the Missouri Valley and displays such architectural features as parquet floors, cherry, walnut, and butternut woodwork and a number of "modern" conveniences quite unusual for the period. The U.S. Department of the Interior designated the house a National Historic Landmark in 1961. Since 1964, a Board of Trustees has been restoring the home to the period of the general, 1869-1916, and it is now maintained as a house museum.

  • This place was more interesting and extravagant than I had guessed! General Dodge had a very interesting and productive life with the military spanning Indian wars to Civil War and then helping with the transcontinental railroad. General Dodge is one of the two men shaking hands in the famous picture with the two trains meeting on the at the golden spike place. I would recommend this place to anybody. You may take a guided or self-guided tour. The house is just as interesting as the man. I learned a lot!
  • Wonderful 4 story historic home with good interpretation. Not good for lower extremity handicapped or eldery due to stairs. I do not know how people in that century got to their bedrooms. The ballroom was on the third floor.
