The plan some 20 years in the making converted the long-abandoned Vulcan Lakes quarry, which was first mined by the Vulcan Lakes Materials Company in the 1950s, opened to the Community in October 2010. The city entered into an agreement with the company in 1990, allowing use of Three Oaks Road in exchange for ownership of the property once mining was depleted. In 2007, the property was deeded to the city, and the Vulcan Lakes Advisory Committee and city staff began creating the vision for a recreation area.Using our world travel planner, Crystal Lake attractions like Three Oaks Recreation Area can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.
The City of Crystal Lake reclaimed the quarry and turned it into an amazing passive community recreation experience. Pristine waters, natural habitat, and incredible fishing. Rent rowboats, canoes, kayaks, sailboats, paddleboats, or enjoy a grassy picnic, various overlooks with breathtaking views of the water and lake islands. Enjoy the swimming beach, hiking trails, a small-child playground/spray park and a Culver's Restaurant with outdoor lakeside dining patio.

Friendly staff, clean, not overly crowded, and close to our new house! We just moved up to Crystal Lake in the middle of summer, and my son and I love coming here. It’s a great amenity for residents and friends/family. We have a great time every time we visit! Glad to have this so close to home for summer!
I just love love love this place! Boat rentals and the bar nearby is an awesome get away for everyday after work I watch the sunset and grab something to eat almost every night after work I also rent the paddle boat pontoon every weekend as well to get on the water! Me and my family are blessed to have this little getaway so close to home It may not be a resort, but it's closest thing you're gonna get get being 2hours+ from the crowded Chicago beaches And parking is free!
