Generally considered to be the oldest town established by European Americans in the Black Hills, Custer began as a mining town. Today the town of about 2,000 reflects the Old West, as it borders a popular state park that brings people from around the country to view buffalo, deer, antelope, and prairie dogs. Main Street, which the city claims is the widest in the nation, hosts a number of dining and shopping opportunities against the scenic backdrop of the Black Hills. A number of attractions invoke the pioneer spirit, including wagon trips, a 19th-century railroad, and a historical courthouse museum. The city owes much of its tourism to the proximity of two national memorials, as well as the ample outdoor activities of the Black Hills.
