Chestatee Wildlife Preserve & Zoo, Dahlonega

Chestatee Wildlife Preserve is a Georgia 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation and fully licensed rescue, exotic animal and wildlife preserve. The Preserve is funded through guest admission fees, corporate, and personal donations.

The Preserve is located 45 minutes north of Atlanta, GA on Old Dahlonega Highway (SR 115) in Dahlonega, and sits on over 20 acres of gently rolling farmland. Over 100 animals, with many different species, live at CWP. The Preserve is a magical place to walk around or feed some of the animals. The pace of the Preserve is meant to be slow as guests meander among the exhibits. They can’t help but see and hear new things. This is when the questions usually start and volunteers circulating throughout the property are quick to help with answers that hopefully lead to more questions.

There are many places to sit throughout the Preserve, picnic tables to enjoy lunch or a snack, and a playground for the little ones. Another goal of the Preserve is to provide a safe non-commercial place for each guest to enjoy the gift of time with their spouse, family, partner, or self. The Preserve is a place where it is fun to just sit, watch, and reflect.

It usually takes about one hour to complete a visit but each guest is encouraged to spend as much time as they would like with the animals.

  • Let’s be clear Chestatee is a preserve where volunteers help care for animal that other humans have abandoned. Yes some cages are empty and that is a good thing. Staff are friendly, animals are well t...  more »

  • What a miraculous visit! Former country girl here, gone to the city. As such, I found the exotic animals a refreshing experience! The staff was so nice and informative on what animals to visit and why. As an educator as well, I can see this being a great opportunity for educational visits for the children on some of their favorite animals! It is all for non-profit and the animals seem happy! I love the basket to feed the animals with! They do so many activities that are great for the while family! Bring a picnic basket as there are a few places to sit and visit with new furry, feathery, and fluffy buddies!
  • Fun experience here today. Kids got to feed zebras, horses, donkeys and bison. Bears, white tigers and monkeys are all great to see. When we came a couple of years ago, there were more large wild cats and reptiles. Since this is a preserve, they probably are in other locations now. Friendly people and good area to walk around at own pace.
