The Community of Danevang was established in 1894 by Danish immigrants who were determined to mold the land into a profitable agriculture venture and soon found cotton was best suited for this area.To visit Danish Heritage Museum and other attractions in Danevang, use our Danevang trip planner.
Through the following years, English gradually became the primary language and the citizens of Danevang became Americanized.
In 1992, a group of people with ties to Danevang realized that the Danish heritage of Danevang was being lost and decided to form the Danish Heritage Preservation Society for the purpose of restoring and preserving that heritage.
The Society purchased three acres of land from the church for a museum site. Two buildings have been moved to this site and a 6,100 square foor museum building has been built to resemble a Danish barn.
In 1970, Danevang was designated as a historical site and a Texas Historical marker was erected.
The Danish Heritage Museum is housed in a building constructed very much like those built by the early settlers and includes features reminiscent of the barns of Denmark. Of course, the roof is red.
The Museum houses artifacts of the early Danish settlement and contains exhibits relating to the Viking culture, as well as exhibits pertaining to the agriculture of the area, weather observation and the historic Danevang church and cemetery.
Danish Heritage Museum reviews
We had the best time at the museum. The curator of the museum was so pleasant and accommodating, and so knowledgeable about the exhibits. It definitely was a memorable occasion. more »
The museum was very interesting and well-presented. It was such a surprise to open the doors of the barn-like structure to find such a gem! The Sears house was fascinating! more »
