The Audubon Bird Sanctuary is a bird sanctuary on the eastern side of Dauphin Island, Alabama, measuring 164 acres (66 ha). The island is an important stop for many bird migrations, as it is often the first land birds encounter when crossing the Gulf of Mexico. The island was dedicated as an Important Bird Area due to this fact.

The sanctuary itself, created in 1961, features a wide variety of landforms, including a freshwater lake, swamp, pine forest, and dunes. The trail system, spanning three miles, was designated as a National Recreation Trail in 2012.

  • A great place to spend some time when on island. Easy to walk. The non board walk areas are flat. You can walk to a beach area and see swap and lake area. We were there in December so didn't see...

  • This is a really nice place. There's a walking trail you walk through to get to the beach. And there's the ferry right past this trail that you drive your car on and go across the water. The Audubon Bird Sanctuary is free but the ferry you have to pay for and I don't know how much it is. But still so worth the drive over there for a relaxing fun day or weekend visit! Just the area is really nice. Theres also a bike trail right by the road, by the Audubon Bird Sanctuary that I see people riding their bikes, walking their dogs and walking with their children on it.
  • We always love to walk through here. So many beautiful plants, and trees to enjoy, along with the different species of birds. Love the pond to, even if we have never seen the gator. We live the turtles. We love to keep up with the Osprey as well. The sand dunes, are beautiful and so is the beach. This year we even got to enjoy the water spout.
